The Delhi National Zoological Park

The zoo is also known as the Delhi National Zoological Park. It is a favorite tourist spot for Delhites. The zoo is known to be the shelter of more than 1200 reptiles, mammals and birds. These animals belong to countries like Africa, America and Australia, other than India.


The zoo is situated near Purana Quila, or the Old Fort, one of the famous historic spots in Delhi. It is located 4 kms away from Connaught Place.

What to see here


The Delhi zoo offers you a plethora of wild animals. The zoo in Delhi is in fact, a treat for all animal lovers. Some of the animals that you must especially see are:

  • White tiger from Rewa
  • Indian elephant (it is known to play a harmonica)

How to reach the zoo

The Delhi National Zoological Park is very easy to reach. It is situated 12 kms away from the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT). The place is well connected to railways. The New Delhi Railway Station is located 6 kms from the zoo. The Old Delhi Railway Station is 10 kms away from here. The Indira Gandhi International Airport is situated 25 kms from the zoo. Do you want to reach the zoo by metro? You must alight at Central Secretariat is the nearest Delhi Metro Station. Buses are also available from various local points.

Time to Visit

The zoo is open on all days except Friday. The preferred time to visit the zoo is

  • 9 am to 4:30 pm between 1st April and mid-October
  • 9.30 am to 4.00 pm between October and March

Normally, it takes about 2 hours to visit the zoo. Mobile vans with open roofs are available at special charges for visitors.

Admission fees

Indians pay 5 rupees to gain entry to the zoo. Foreigners are supposed to pay 10 rupees for access. If you want to take in your camera, you must pay rupees fifty as an additional charge.
